The Brown-Hayes department store stands in the commercially active Edgewood Avenue area, which was second only to Auburn Ave. as the center of black business and social activities. The store and other businessess and churches along Edgewood Avenue comprise the southern border of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic site. Edgewood Avenue was an important E-W Transportation route from downtown Atlanta to the city's eastern residences.

Constructed by G.W.Foot Builders, the store was built in two stages. The two-story portion on the corner of Edgewood Ave. & Boulevard was built just before the turn of the century. The one story building that surrounds the first structure was completed in1912.

Both were owned by the Brown family between 1920 & 1955 and served as a department store even under different ownership. In 1970, Propes Furniture Store moved into the single-story structure. Later it was a local grocery store's warehouse.
